In the UK (and most countries) in order to rent a car you must:

  • Be aged 21 or over
  • Have held a full driving licence for at least one year

Does age have an effect on cost?

On the whole, minimum car rental ages vary depending on the supplier. If a driver is under 25, some suppliers may add a Young Driver Surcharge, this is can be as much as £30 to £40 a day, as younger drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident. However, points on a licence may affect this also.

Minimum age requirements also depend on the type of vehicle – if you wished to hire a 7 seater car, for instance, you would need to be over 25 and have held a licence for a minimum of 24 months.

If you wanted to hire a light van, you would need to be over 21 and have held a licence for at least 24 months.
